The baritone from Volgograd Nikolai Zemlyanskikh, joined the Young Artist Program of the Bolshoi Theater in 2019/20 season. He has been studying vocal with the Artistic Director of the Program Dmitry Vdovin, Makvala Kasrashvili and Svetlana Nesterenko and has attended master classes with Neil Shikoff, Florence Daguerre, John Fisher, Evamaria Wieser. He has performed at the chamber music concerts at the Beethoven Hall under the guidance of Ivari Ilja, Semen Skigin and Luba Orfenova. In November 2019, he was opening Alexandra Pakhmutova’s 90th anniversary concert at the Bolshoi with her famous song The Melody and in December 2019, he took part in the 10th anniversary of the Young Artist Program Gala Concert at the Historical stage of the Bolshoi Theatre, singing Papageno’s aria from the final and the duet with Papagena. In February 2020 he completed an internship at the Music Academy of the 13th Winter International Arts Festival in Sochi, he took part in a concert in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory on Mamaev’s mound in Volgograd, singing Pakhmutova’s song “Hot Snow”.
The new season of 2020-21 saw him participating in September in the virtual concert “Music of World War II: Rememebering the Shared Sacrifice of Allied Nations” organized by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and in the concert at the Great Hall of the Moscow conservatory to commemorate the 125 Anniversary of the Russian poet Sergei Esenin; then in October in the World Opera Day Celebration Concert under the auspices of Opera for Peace, Opera Europe, Opera America and Opera Latinoamerica, singing Sviridov’s song “O those rich lands” and some other online concerts organized by the Young Artist Program.
Nikolay began his musical education at the age 10, first as a guitarist at music school and a year later, he started his vocal training. As a child, Nikolai received many awards at national and international competitions such as the V Sergey Leiferkus International Vocal Competition in Moscow (first prize) and the V International Elena Obraztsova Competition of Young Singers in St. Petersburg (first prize).
After graduating from school in 2015, Nikolai entered the St. Petersburg Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory where he is currently doing his 5th year of studies at the Vocal Department. His performances at the conservatory include such roles as Silvio in “I Pagliacci” and Il Barone in “La Traviata”. In concerts, he appeared at the most prestigious halls of St. Petersburg, such as the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Academic Chapel and the Palace Square.
International competition successes include Grand-prix in the 20th Isabella Yurieva International Vocal Competition in Tallin, 2019, Second Prize at the XI International Zara Dolukhanova Competition “Amber Nightingale” in Kaliningrad, 2018 and First Prize at the XVI International competition “Romansiada” in Moscow.
